Fiona: I don’t eat vegetables…

Who could have thought that I can be a vegetarian for a day? -_-
It was my second day of training at Growth Magazine…

Last May 8, 2009, Go Organic Philippines launched the Organic 101: Experiencing the Organic Way of Life. It was held at the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) located at No. 56 Mo. Ignacia Avenue corner Dr. Lascano St., Quezon City.
The said event was about how to have your own organic farm, enjoying a healthier lifestyle and how to start eating healthier foods. It was composed of different lecture sessions by Go Organic! Philippines National Trainors, which promoted various alternative health, medicine and healing practices associated with nature.
I attended three sessions. The first session was entitled “Healing through food: A personal experience on food’s healing wonders” with Ms. Lovelynn Juan, Doc Susan’s Kitchen and Clinic . She was talking about Leading Bayan ni Juan sa Landas ng Kalusugan. According to her, we should go back on what we have comparing the life now and before in regards with having a healthy diet. She also mentioned three things that Filipinos should get rid off:
1. Milk (it may contain estrogen)
2. Sugar
3. Non-organic meat (those animals that was fed on feeds)
Another session was entitled “The Food Alphabet: Keeping Healthy with Indigenous and Earth-friendly foods” with Ms. Ines Av. Fernandez, Executive Director of ARUGAAN. It was about Balik Tanaw sa ating Saling Lahi. “Eat in season, it has a reason,” said Fernandez.
ARUGAAN is an NGO that has been represent as a day care center like no other. They discussed and advocated breast-feeding and earth-friendly indigenous diet for children. They open the minds of young parents and make them realize that media hype is not a substitute for natural foods. They believed that eating organic fruits and vegetables is the best way to attain good health rather than drinking milk.
The event also featured the most interesting session of the day, ” A Sneak-peak on How to Prepare Delicious and Healthy Foods with Ms. Lisa Dacanay, a development worker as well as practicing vegan. There she questioned the common perception that having healthy and nutritious food is difficult to achieve in our fast-paced modern lives. She demonstrated easy-to prepare recipes and she shared her own tips on how to get high nutritional foods without having stress in preparations. There was somehow a cooking show during the session in which i definitely enjoyed.
We were given the chance to taste the food they cooked. At first I was having a second thought if I was going to taste the food since those foods were mainly veggies! URGH! I don’t eat vegetables! But since the first food they served was actually my favorite pasta, I tried it eventhough there were no Parmesan Cheese. They called it “healthy spaghetti” also known as Pesto. They also served Vegan Lumpia and Mushroom Tinola. I tried them all! I ate vegetables that time

My experience being a media practitioner specifically a journalist with growth magazine helped me a lot. I was able to do things I’ve never done before at the same time feeling happy that I took risks to try it
I am glad that I was a vegan even just for a day
